The International Cardiff Long Course Open Meet is a high class Open Meet, with some of the best teams from around the country participating City of Sheffield, City of Cardiff, Loughborough University, City of Ulster, UEA Norwich etc. For CSSC Swimmers the concept this weekend was a ‘Nationals Championships Rehearsal’ a kind of dry run, to iron out the creases.
The weekend was about placing these swimmers under competition-stress in a very high class competitive environment and seeing where the swimmers were in terms of both physical and mental preparation for the National Championships. The results of which were both positive and yes I have to be candid in some areas negative. Some swimmers, as the results will testify stepped up to the mark, whereas those that did not have to look at both those that are achieving and their own poor Pre-Race & Post Race Protocols (…some swimmers lack of ability or enthusiasm to perform a swim down was poor and reflexive on performance).
These carefully CSSC selected swimmers, produced 77 Top Ten Performances over the course of the weekend. They swam multiple events Heats & Finals with great tenacity. This should give these swimmers sound confidence and experience leading into the National Championships later this month, when they will be fully rested and tapered.
| Gold medals | 13 | | Silver medals | 8 | | Bronze medals | 5 | | 4-10th placing (10-lane pool) | 51 | | Swims inside the National Qualifying Time | 16 |
The majority of our National Qualifiers now have a very realistic chance to make Top 15 or indeed National Final and for some - podium. Provided they maintain a high calibre of training Attendance & Application, remain focused and more importantly learn from their mistakes.
One swimmer that really did excel this weekend was 12 year old Benjamin Stevens achieving 5 Gold Medals and 1 silver medal. It was the manner in which Ben set up his Final Races, which really impressed me. Ben achieved his Target Times in his races by basically swimming out on his own, sometimes the nearest swimmer was 10m behind him. To swim inside the National QT on your own in the 100m & 200m Butterfly is not easy, Ben rose to the challenge and now has that self confidence of knowing what he is capable of. Well done Ben.
Despite missing the cut for this years National Age Group Championships 11 year old Jessica Bishop has put this disappointment behind her, she is not prepared to sit around and sulk about it and is already working hard towards the future. Ironically she beat several girls in finals this weekend that have made the National Age Group Championships. Jess won 1 Gold, 3 Silver and 1 Bronze medal this weekend.
As I say there were some very impressive swims over the course of the weekend, for instance one 13 year old girl from City of Cardiff swam 58.1 for 100m Free and 1:13.45 for 100m Breaststroke! A 16 year old boy, from the same club, clocked 52.0 for 100m Free! This is a stark reminder to all how far the bar has been raised.
I am now looking forward to seeing the Progress & Results from the Fareham Nomads Open Meet and National Championships.
